Risk Reduction

Risk Reduction

“When administered under supportive conditions, psilocybin occasioned experiences similar to spontaneously-occurring mystical experiences that, at 14-month follow-up, were considered by volunteers to be among the most personally meaningful and spiritually significant of their lives.” (RR Griffiths, WA Richards, MW Johnson, UD McCann, and R. Jesse, 2008)

Psilocybin journey with a psychedelic coach focused on guidance and risk reduction

Creating conditions for a safer psychedelic experience

Psychedelic work can be profound, scary, euphoric, unpredictable and sometimes overwhelming, often within a single experience. Working with an experienced, ethical guide or coach who is intimately familiar with the psychedelic landscape who can hold space, tend to your needs and act as an ally and witness while gently guiding you during your journey can be vital to having a deep and meaningful experience.

The cultivation of Set (one’s thoughtfully considered intention) and Setting (the physical space, music, decor, atmosphere and quality of the relationship between client and facilitator) are fundamental to the experience, deserving thorough attention.

While it can never be eliminated entirely, thoughtful preparation and attention to safety protocols can help mitigate risk. Trust, clear communication, appropriate boundaries and mutually understood agreements can all contribute to a greater sense of safety and agency.

Risk reduction may include:

  • Considering your physical and emotional readiness
  • Becoming familiar with potential effects and challenges
  • Exploring intentions and expectations
  • Considering medications, health conditions and other potential contraindications
  • Giving careful attention to set and setting
  • Establishing clear agreements, boundaries and expectations with anyone supporting you
  • Understanding how the day may unfold and what protocols will be in place
  • Considering practical matters such as transportation, privacy, food, hydration and communication
  • Having a plan for unexpected or difficult situations
  • Allowing adequate time and space afterward for rest, reflection and integration

None of these things can guarantee a particular kind of experience. An important piece of risk reduction is to respect, embrace and prepare for uncertainty rather than attempting to control it.

Having a clear understanding of where one’s agency lies, what agreements are in place and what support is available can make it easier to turn attention toward the experience itself.

The work does not necessarily end with the experience. In the days and weeks that follow, integration can offer space to reflect on what emerged and consider how it might inform everyday life.
